A Suitable Boy- Review

Based on Vikram Seth’s most popular novel ‘A Suitable Boy’, this web series directed by celebrated director Mira Nair turned out to be an interesting adaptation. Set in the era of post-independence in India, the story revolves around finding a suitable boy for the female protagonist Lata. She has three suitors, Amit (Mikhail Sen), Haresh Khanna (Namit Das), and Kabir Durrani (Danesh Razvi) contending for her hand.

The concept revolves around the life of a college student who is brilliant and quite clever of her age. She is bound to choose a suitable groom for her after the marriage of her elder sister to a suitable family of ministers. But the progressive nature of Lata has restrained herself to explore more. At the same time her brother-in-law Maan falls in love with a world-weary courtesan. Based on the political views around 1951 in India, this unique story is fully justified by Mira Nair’s aesthetic direction and the attractive screenplay by Andrew Davies added extra charms and shades to the beauty of ‘A Suitable Boy’.

This series fully belongs to Tanya Maniktala, she has gracefully portrayed her intellectual character of Lata, Ishaan Khatter has also done justice to his role of Maan. Tabu has teamed up with Mira Nair after The Namesake, here she has beautifully represented her part with grand endurance. The series is overflowing with efficient actors like Vinay Pathak, Vijay Raaz, Ranvir Shorey, Randeep Hooda. Vivaan Shah, Vivek Gomber, Kulbhushan Kharbana, Sheeba Chadha, Shahana Goswami, Sharvari Deshpande, Rasika Dugal everyone added graceful traces to their characters throughout the plot.
